CNC machining of small brass parts is a specialized manufacturing process for miniature, precision brass components. While brass is easy to cut, its softness and susceptibility to deformation, coupled with its tiny size making clamping difficult, present challenges when machining micro-sized parts. The core challenge lies in translating brass's excellent machinability into absolute control over micrometer-level dimensions and perfect surfaces, achieving a balance between high efficiency and ultra-precision.

The process engineer first analyzes the part drawings under a microscope, where tolerances are often measured in 0.01mm. The core is designing a micro-process scheme. Precision spring collets, vacuum chucks, or specialized fixtures must be used to hold the micro-workpiece with extremely small, evenly distributed forces; any slight overtightening will lead to permanent deformation. Tool selection is crucial; micro-end mills and turning tools made of extremely fine-grained cemented carbide or CBN material must be used, often with diameters less than 1mm, and the cutting edges must be specially polished to a mirror finish to ensure extreme sharpness and minimize cutting resistance.
1. Datum Creation and Light Roughing: First, a tiny plane or outer circle is machined using extremely light cutting forces as a datum. Similar to micro-engraving, material is removed instantaneously through high-speed, light cutting, minimizing the effects of cutting force and heat. Micro-lubrication or oil mist cooling is crucial, providing both lubrication and cooling while preventing displacement of micro-parts due to liquid pressure.
2. Fine Shaping and Corner Clearing: In semi-finishing and finishing, smaller diameter tools are used at higher spindle speeds and precisely calculated step distances to perform three-dimensional contour precision milling of tiny grooves, teeth, and internal holes. Programming at this stage requires advanced toolpaths such as helical entry and contour climbing to avoid direct vertical tool impact on the part.
3. Micro-hole and Thread Machining: For micro-holes or micro-threads with diameters less than 0.5mm, micro-drills and taps are used, completed under conditions of extremely high spindle speed and extremely stable feed. Any vibration can cause tool breakage or hole misalignment.

1. Ultra-precision Deburring and Polishing: Under a stereo microscope, using techniques such as fine tungsten steel wire, polishing, or laser deburring, microburrs that are difficult to see with the naked eye are removed from the parts. For optical or sealing surfaces requiring a mirror finish, fluid polishing or magnetic abrasive grinding is required.
3. Microscopic Comprehensive Inspection: In the metrology laboratory, high-magnification tool microscopes, laser confocal microscopes, or ultra-high precision coordinate measuring machines are used for inspection. Not only are dimensions measured, but also microscopic geometry, edge quality, and surface roughness are analyzed. For batches of parts, rapid full inspection is performed using optical image screening machines.
In summary, the CNC machining of small brass parts is a manufacturing art performed at the millimeter or even micrometer scale, integrating ultra-precision mechanics, micromaterials science, and ultimate process control.
