Professional CNC machined knurled shafts offer dual protection for high-friction grip and precision transmission.
Knurled shafts, precision shaft parts formed by cold extrusion to create specific patterns on the workpiece surface, effectively increase grip friction, facilitating manual adjustment and preventing slippage. They are also widely used in interference fit connections, decorative applications, and identification.
We provide a full-process engineering service, from knurling design, material selection, process development, prototype manufacturing to mass production. Our engineering team is proficient in the performance requirements and machining techniques of various knurled shafts:
Straight Knurled Shaft: Axial straight stripes provide reliable axial grip, suitable for knobs, adjusting levers, etc.
Cross-knurled Shaft: Cross-knurled structure provides all-around friction, suitable for torque transmission and anti-slip grip.
Raised Knurled Shaft: Dotted or specially shaped raised areas are used to increase local friction or for decorative effect.
Segmented Knurled Shaft: Knurled sections on specific shaft types, with the remaining parts precision-machined, meeting multi-functional needs.
Threaded Knurled Shaft: Composite structure of knurled and threaded sections, used for integrated locking and adjusting designs.
Professional CNC machined knurled shafts offer dual protection for high-friction grip and precision transmission.
II. Precise Matching of Materials and Applications
Stainless Steel Knurled Shaft (304, 316, 303: Excellent corrosion resistance and overall performance, suitable for food machinery and outdoor equipment environments.
Aluminum Alloy Knurled Shafts (6061-T6, 7075-T6): Lightweight design, suitable for precision instruments, manual adjustment mechanisms, and aerospace components.
Brass Knurled Shafts (H59, H62): Combining good conductivity and aesthetics, suitable for electrical equipment knobs, instrument adjustment levers, and retro-style accessories.
III. A Complete Manufacturing Chain Achieves Uniformity in Knurling Quality and Shaft Precision:
Precision benchmark machining utilizes high-precision CNC lathes to precisely turn shaft blanks, completing the machining of the outer diameter, end face, steps, and chamfers in a single setup. This establishes precise process benchmarks, laying the foundation for knurling processing.
1. Precision Knurling Machining
Rolling Knurling: Using high-precision knurling cutters and knurling wheels, patterns are formed on the workpiece surface through cold extrusion. This process has high production efficiency, producing clear and uniform knurling textures, suitable for mass production.
Cutting Knurling: For workpieces with high hardness or special knurling requirements, cutting knurling is used. A specialized cutting tool removes material to create the pattern, resulting in a finer knurling texture.
Straight Knurling: Using a single-wheel or double-wheel knurling cutter, straight stripes are formed along the axial direction, controlling the consistency of pitch and depth.
Cross Knurling: Using a double-wheel cross knurling cutter, a cross pattern is formed in a single feed, with strict control over the pattern angle and pitch.
Precision Turning and Threading: For threaded knurled shafts, precision thread turning or thread rolling is performed before and after knurling to ensure thread accuracy and the relative position of the knurled sections.
Heat Treatment and Dimensional Stabilization: Depending on material and performance requirements, annealing, stress relief treatment, or aging treatment is provided to eliminate processing stress and ensure dimensional stability after knurling. For stainless steel knurled shafts, passivation treatment can be performed to improve corrosion resistance.
Precision deburring and cleaning utilizes vibratory grinding, magnetic polishing, or high-pressure washing processes to thoroughly remove tiny burrs and metal shavings from the knurled texture, resulting in a clean and smooth surface.
Anodizing (Aluminum Alloy): Creates a wear-resistant ceramic layer, improving surface hardness and corrosion resistance
Polishing: Achieves a bright surface and enhances decorative effect
IV. Comprehensive Quality Assurance System
1. Geometric Accuracy Inspection
Image measuring instrument or tool microscope to inspect knurling pitch, depth, angle, and texture clarity
Outer micrometer to inspect the outer diameter dimension and change before and after knurling
Coordinate measuring machine to inspect shaft straightness, roundness, and coaxiality
Roughness meter to measure the surface quality of non-knurled sections
We deliver not just a knurled shaft, but a core manually adjustable and connecting component that has undergone precision knurling, rigorous dimensional inspection, and grip performance verification, providing reliable friction and precise transmission.
