High-strength stainless steel fasteners CNC machined precision parts

The core of stainless steel fastener performance lies in its material; different structures determine the fundamental differences in strength, toughness, corrosion resistance, and cost. According to international standards, stainless steel suitable for manufacturing fasteners can be mainly divided into several categories: austenitic stainless steel, martensitic stainless steel, and ferritic stainless steel, each corresponding to different application scenarios and performance requirements.

1. Austenitic stainless steel fasteners

What are the core characteristics of austenitic stainless steel fasteners?

Core characteristics: Non-magnetic, possesses excellent corrosion resistance and good plasticity and toughness, but relatively low hardness and strength.

What are the applications of austenitic stainless steel in fasteners?

Applications in fasteners: This is the most widely used stainless steel fastener material. It is especially suitable for general environments with high corrosion resistance requirements but not extreme strength requirements, such as interior decoration, food equipment, and general outdoor structures.

What are the common grades?

The most commonly used grades are A2 (304) and the more corrosion-resistant A4 (316).

2. Martensitic stainless steel fasteners

What are the core characteristics of martensitic stainless steel?

Core characteristics: Hardness and strength can be significantly improved through heat treatment; it is magnetic, but its corrosion resistance is generally lower than that of austenitic stainless steel.

What are the applications of martensitic stainless steel in fasteners?

Applications in fasteners: Mainly used to manufacture fasteners requiring high strength, high hardness, and a certain degree of wear resistance, such as high-strength bolts and screw heads. Generally suitable for applications where corrosion resistance is not stringent but mechanical properties are required.

What are some common grades?

Common grades: 410, 420.

3. Ferritic Stainless Steel

What are some examples of ferritic stainless steel?

Core characteristics: Magnetic material, with good resistance to stress corrosion cracking and certain corrosion resistance, but its plasticity, toughness, and formability are not as good as austenitic steel.

What are the applications of ferritic stainless steel?

Applications in fasteners: Relatively limited, commonly found in applications requiring a specific balance between cost and corrosion resistance, such as some automotive exhaust systems or decorative fasteners. Its strength and machinability limit its widespread use in high-performance fasteners.

What are some common grades?

Common grade: 430.

What are the main processing techniques?

Turning: Using the aforementioned special stainless steel, continuous and stable cutting is maintained. Thread machining can be performed using turning, grinding, or the more efficient thread rolling/rolling process.

Heat Treatment: Performed according to performance requirements. For example, martensitic stainless steel requires quenching and tempering to obtain high strength; austenitic stainless steel often uses solution treatment to improve corrosion resistance.

Quality Control: Dimensions, thread accuracy, surface defects, and mechanical properties must be monitored throughout the process to ensure consistent performance.
